Triumph of Faith illustrates that being a Christian courts suffering, but there
are assurances of triumph over evil. By standing up for their values against
the excesses of Idi Amin, Christians are imprisoned; others are killed while
more go into exile as the rest live under fear and uncertainty. It is from this
sacrifice that successful efforts to remove the regime are born, which
confirms the Christian perspective of suffering: God’s power is to bring light
where there is darkness. Despite Idi Amin’s persecution, the church remains
strong and also grows in faith and numbers. It is disunity that breeds evil and
it is unity that overcomes evil with Idi Amin’s fall. Christians are called to
unite and fight evil instead of surrendering to threats of fear and death.
The book subjects the political history of Uganda and social characteristics
to a theological interpretation, enriches Christian theodicies of suffering and adds a new dimension
to the understanding of the Idi Amin period.
